Purpose

The holiday marks the annexation of Guanacaste in 1824, when the region's residents chose to become part of Costa Rica rather than remain under Nicaraguan rule. It highlights self-determination, cultural heritage and national unity.

How Is It Celebrated?

Guanacaste Day is filled with colorful festivities, patriotic displays and cultural tributes:

• Traditional folk dances, such as Punto Guanacasteco, are performed in schools and town squares.

History

The Guanacaste region was originally part of Nicaragua but, in 1824, its citizens voted to join Costa Rica under the motto, "De la patria por nuestra voluntad" (Part of the homeland by our own will). The Costa Rican government gladly accepted and no war or conflict occurred.
