How Is It Celebrated?

Russians decorate their homes with elaborate fir trees (yolka), sparkling lights and ornaments. Families gather for lavish feasts, featuring traditional dishes like Olivier salad and herring "under a fur coat." At midnight, the Kremlin clock chimes and champagne toasts fill the air. Ded Moroz (Father Frost) and his granddaughter Snegurochka (Snow Maiden) bring gifts to children. There are firework displays and many people will go out to enjoy the winter weather. Due to the long holiday, many people will take the time to travel and visit friends and family.

History

The tradition of celebrating New Year's on January 1st was established by Peter the Great in 1699. During the Soviet era, New Year's became the primary winter holiday, replacing many religious celebrations.
